10 Gulden Biljet (IJsvogel)

10 Gulden Biljet (IJsvogel)

1995–1999

About this item

The 10 gulden ijsvogel is the last and arguably most beautiful version of the Dutch 10 gulden banknote. Designed by Jaap Drupsteen and issued from 1997, it features a stunning geometric depiction of a kingfisher (ijsvogel) in shades of blue and green. It was one of the final banknote designs before the Netherlands switched to the euro in 2002, making it the note many Dutch people remember most vividly from the gulden era.

The ijsvogel 10 gulden is collectible because it represents the pinnacle of Dutch banknote design — clean, modern, and unmistakably Dutch. Drupsteen's geometric style pushed banknote aesthetics in a completely new direction. Because this note was in circulation for only about five years before the euro transition, it occupies a unique place as both common (millions were printed) and emotionally resonant (it was the last tenner people used).

When buying, look for uncirculated (UNC) condition — sharp corners, no folds, and crisp paper. The blue-green colors should be vibrant with no fading. Since these notes are relatively recent, finding clean examples is easier than with older gulden notes, but truly perfect UNC specimens still command a premium. Check serial numbers for collectible patterns. Store flat in acid-free sleeves — never fold or laminate. Bundles of consecutive serial numbers are especially prized by serious collectors.
