Commodore 64 Home Computer

1980–1994

About this item

The Commodore 64 is the best-selling single computer model of all time, with estimates ranging from 12 to 17 million units sold between 1982 and 1994. It packed a MOS 6510 CPU, 64KB of RAM, and the legendary SID sound chip into an affordable all-in-one keyboard unit that brought computing to the masses.

Collectors prize the C64 for its enormous software library — over 10,000 commercial titles — and its role as the gateway machine for an entire generation of programmers and gamers. The distinctive breadbin case design is iconic, and working units with original packaging command serious premiums. Regional variants, early revision boards, and the later C64C model each have their own following.

When buying, check that the keyboard membrane is responsive (common failure point), test the SID chip (different revisions sound slightly different, and the 6581 is preferred by chiptune enthusiasts), and inspect the power supply — original PSUs are known to fail and damage the machine. A working original PSU in good condition is almost as valuable as the computer itself. Boxed units with manuals, demo cassettes, and the original RF cable are the holy grail.
