Hot Wheels Crack-Ups
About this item
Hot Wheels Crack-Ups were Mattel's crash-damage cars produced from 1983 to 1988. Each car featured spring-loaded body panels that would pop open or flip on impact, simulating realistic crash damage — a gimmick that made them irresistible to kids and now makes them irresistible to collectors.
The line included police cruisers, stock cars, pickup trucks, and sports cars, all with the signature crumple mechanism. Early models were manufactured in Hong Kong, with later production shifting to Malaysia. Key models like the Blind Sider, Smash Hit, Knocker Stocker, and Front End Basher are among the most sought-after.
Prices for loose singles typically sit in the €5–€15 range, though rare color variations and complete-condition examples with working spring mechanisms can push well above that. The crash gimmick means many surviving examples have worn or broken panels, making fully functional specimens the real prize for serious collectors.
