Apple iBook Clamshell
About this item
The Apple iBook clamshell (1999) is one of the most visually striking computers ever made. Designed by Jony Ive's team fresh off the iMac G3's success, the clamshell iBook brought the same translucent, candy-colored aesthetic to a laptop form factor. Available in Blueberry, Tangerine, Graphite, Indigo, and Key Lime, its rounded "toilet seat" shape (a nickname it never quite shook) was polarizing then but beloved now. It also introduced built-in Wi-Fi to the consumer market via an optional AirPort card.
The clamshell iBook is a design icon and a favorite among vintage Apple collectors. It represents a moment when Apple was at its most playful and daring — before the aluminum unibody era made everything sleek and serious. The Tangerine and Key Lime colors are particularly sought after, with Key Lime being the rarest as it was a later, limited release. These machines photograph beautifully and make fantastic display pieces.
When buying, check the screen carefully for dead pixels, discoloration, or the dreaded backlight bleed. The hinge mechanism can wear out, causing the display to flop. The rubber feet on the bottom are almost always missing. Battery life will be zero on the original battery — replacement batteries exist but are third-party. The optical drive (CD or DVD, depending on the model) often fails. Cosmetically, check for cracks in the translucent plastic shell, especially around the latch and handle. A clamshell iBook in clean cosmetic condition with a working screen is a real find — don't expect it to be a daily driver, but as a piece of design history it's unmatched.
