Nike Air Max BW (39)

1990–1994

About this item

The Nike Air Max BW in size 39 features one of the most distinctive designs in Air Max history. The "Big Window" — that oversized, kidney-shaped Air unit visible through the midsole — was a radical departure when designer Tinker Hatfield introduced it in 1991. It made the cushioning technology the star of the shoe rather than hiding it away.

Beyond its design pedigree, the BW holds a unique place in European subculture. It became the de facto shoe of the Dutch gabber and hardcore scene, worn by tens of thousands of ravers throughout the 90s. That cultural significance has turned it into a crossover collectible — sought after by both sneakerheads and people preserving rave history. The OG Persian Violet colorway remains the most iconic, but classic Black/White pairs are equally tied to the scene.

Size 39 sits in a tricky spot — too large for most women's vintage hunting, too small for most men's. This means less competition but also fewer listings. When you do find a pair, inspect the toe box for creasing and the heel counter for collapse. Original 90s BW's used different foam than modern retros, and that foam degrades. A pair that looks pristine in photos might crumble the first time you lace up.
