Nike Air Max BW (42)

1990–2024

About this item

The Nike Air Max BW (Big Window) is an iconic runner from 1991, designed by Tinker Hatfield with the largest visible Air unit Nike had ever put in a shoe at that time. In the Netherlands, the Air Max BW became the unofficial shoe of the gabber scene — if you were at a Thunderdome party in the 90s, half the crowd was wearing these. That cultural connection makes it a crossover collectible between sneakerheads and gabber enthusiasts.

Vintage pairs from the early 90s are extremely rare in wearable condition because the Air units and midsoles degrade over time — a problem Nike collectors call "sole crumbling." Retro reissues are more practical for wearing, but original OG pairs in any condition are prized as display pieces. The classic Persian Violet colorway is the most iconic and commands the highest prices.

When buying vintage, inspect the midsole for cracking and test the Air unit by pressing it — if it's completely flat and hard, it's dead. Check the upper for separation from the sole. For retro reissues, verify the production year and colorway authenticity. Size 42 (EU) is a common enough size that you have options, but patience pays off — the right pair in good condition is worth waiting for over a beat-up impulse buy.
