Sega Game Gear Console

The Sega Game Gear was Sega's answer to the Game Boy, launching in 1991 with a full-color backlit screen that blew Nintendo's green-tinted display out of the water. It was technically impressive for its time — essentially a portable Master System — but the six-AA-battery appetite kept it from dominating the market.

Collector interest has grown significantly as retro handheld gaming has its moment. The Game Gear is affordable enough to collect but scarce enough in working condition to be interesting. That backlight and the capacitors inside are the Achilles heel — many units need a recap to function properly.

When buying, always ask if the unit has been recapped. A Game Gear with original capacitors will likely have sound issues, dim screens, or won't power on at all. Check for screen burn and scratches on the lens. Recapped units with a clean screen command a justified premium — they're essentially restored to factory-fresh performance.
